EMDR THERAPY IN ONTARIO
EMDR Therapy
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a research-supported therapy that helps the brain process traumatic memories so they no longer feel as emotionally overwhelming. It can help reduce the impact of past experiences without requiring you to relive them in detail.
Have You Ever Felt Like Your Mind Knows You're Safe, But Your Body Doesn't?
You may know that the danger has passed, yet certain memories, situations, or emotions still trigger intense reactions. Perhaps you find yourself constantly on edge, overwhelmed by anxiety, avoiding reminders of the past, or feeling emotionally stuck despite years of trying to move forward.
You may have talked about what happened, gained insight into why you feel the way you do, and learned helpful coping strategies. Yet something still feels unfinished.
This is often because trauma isn't stored only as a story we remember. It can also become stored in the brain and nervous system in ways that continue to influence how we think, feel, and respond long after the experience has ended.
EMDR Therapy was developed to help the brain process these unresolved experiences so they no longer carry the same emotional intensity or continue to interfere with your life.
What Is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based psychotherapy developed to help people recover from trauma and other distressing life experiences.
When something overwhelming happens, the brain's natural ability to process the experience can become disrupted. Instead of becoming an ordinary memory, the experience may remain "stuck," continuing to trigger intense emotions, physical sensations, negative beliefs, or unwanted reactions long after the event has passed.
EMDR uses guided bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, tapping, or alternating sounds, while you briefly focus on aspects of the memory. This process helps the brain reprocess the experience so it becomes integrated in a healthier way.
The goal isn't to erase your memories or make you forget what happened. Instead, EMDR helps reduce the emotional intensity associated with those memories so they no longer feel as overwhelming or continue to shape your present.
Many people find that memories become less distressing, negative beliefs begin to shift, and they feel more able to respond to life from the present rather than from past experiences.
WHO EMDR CAN HELP
EMDR Can Help With Many Different Experiences
EMDR therapy isn't just for PTSD. Many people seek EMDR to help resolve experiences that continue to affect how they feel, react, or see themselves.
Past Trauma
Unprocessed experiences that still feel emotionally present today.
Anxiety & Panic
Reduce the emotional intensity behind anxious thoughts and physical reactions.
Negative Self-Beliefs
Shift beliefs like "I'm not good enough" or "I'm not safe."
Stress & Burnout
When your nervous system stays stuck in survival mode long after the stress has passed.
Relationship Wounds
Heal painful experiences involving rejection, abandonment, or attachment injuries.
Performance Blocks
Address experiences that continue to affect confidence at work, school, sports, or public speaking.
What to Expect During EMDR Therapy
EMDR Therapy follows a structured, evidence-based process that moves at a pace that feels safe and manageable. You will never be asked to "push through" overwhelming emotions or revisit difficult memories before you're ready.
Treatment typically includes:
- Learning skills to help you feel grounded and emotionally regulated.
- Identifying the memories, beliefs, or experiences contributing to your current difficulties.
- Processing distressing memories using bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, tapping, or alternating sounds.
- Strengthening healthier beliefs and reducing the emotional intensity of painful memories.
- Integrating the changes into your daily life.
Many clients notice that memories become less emotionally charged, their reactions feel less automatic, and they experience a greater sense of calm, clarity, and choice. While every person's experience is unique, the goal is to help you feel less controlled by the past and more connected to the present.
Is EMDR Therapy Right for You?
EMDR Therapy can be an effective treatment for many people, but it isn't the right fit for everyone or for every concern. During your initial consultation, we'll discuss your goals, your history, and whether EMDR is likely to be beneficial for your situation.
Some clients begin EMDR within a few sessions, while others benefit from spending more time building coping skills, emotional regulation, and a sense of safety before processing difficult memories. There is no "right" timeline. Therapy moves at a pace that respects your nervous system, not an arbitrary schedule.
My approach combines EMDR with a broader understanding of trauma, attachment, and the nervous system. Rather than simply reducing symptoms, our goal is to help you feel safer, more connected, and more able to live in the present instead of reacting from the past.
Whether you've experienced a single traumatic event or years of chronic stress, abuse, neglect, or attachment wounds, healing is possible.

Whether you're just beginning to explore the impact of your childhood or you've spent years trying to make sense of your experiences, you don't have to do it alone.
Healing from childhood trauma isn't about changing who you are. It's about understanding yourself with greater compassion, recognizing the ways you've adapted to survive, and discovering that those survival strategies no longer have to define your life.
